Hello!
My name is Emily Ward and I graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a Bachelor of Arts in both journalism and fashion media, as well as a minor in English, in May 2016.
I am a multimedia journalist passionate about creating stories that inform, impact and have a little fun along the way. I possess a love of writing, editing and communication, along with an enthusiasm for hands-on work, team collaboration and digital engagement.
As a little girl, I always had my nose buried in a book, which later transformed into always having the latest fashion magazines on hand. While attending SMU, I realized my love for literature and my passion for fashion could be combined to capture countless untold stories.
Working as the fashion editor of SMU Campus Weekly, SMU’s independent, student-run newspaper, I gained experience generating ideas and writing three or more stories a week for the fashion section. This position also provided me with the opportunities to interview inspirational role models, such as former Harper’s Bazaar editor Kate Betts, and lead two “Speed Team” shifts a week, during which contributing writers would have two hours to report, write and publish a story on the newspaper’s website.
Editorial internships at Arizona Foothills Magazine, D Home and D Weddings speak directly to my understanding of media ethics, my grasp of AP style, my knowledge in fact-checking and my strength in copyediting. As the editor of SMU Fashion Media, I curated content for various social media platforms, and my involvements both on campus and off have led me to become well-versed in production programs such as Avid iNews, Camayak and Adobe InDesign.
